Developing Clinical Leaders Two Pharmacy Residents at a Time
For Hospital Pharmacy Resident, Vineeta Bhojani, Pharm D, choosing a pharmacy career was all about being part of a team that provides safe and effective medications to patients. “The best part about being a resident here is that this program is designed to provide a wide range of experience among diverse patient populations with a focus on inpatient acute care,” Bhojani explained. Bhojani is one of two residents currently enrolled in the Hospital’s Pharmacy Residency Program.
Troy Gibson, Pharm D, is also a resident. “My interest in pharmacy began quite young,” Gibson said. “As the years progressed through junior high and high school, I debated among several professions in the healthcare community but always found myself coming back to pharmacy.”
The purpose of the Hospital’s Pharmacy Residency Program is to provide a structured and advanced educational and training experience that develops or enhances a pharmacist’s skills to provide pharmaceutical care to a diverse patient population in a health-system environment with the expectation that graduates of the Program would be prepared to successfully practice in patient care positions in a health-system environment or pursue entry into a second year pharmacy residency training program in the area of their choosing.
“Our residents have numerous responsibilities,” explained Joan Mege, Pharm D. “They staff in the Department as pharmacists on weekends, attend, contribute to, and participate in multidisciplinary patient care rounds and participate on interdisciplinary teams. They also assist in mentoring pharmacy students on rotation. They rotate through experiential learning blocks in various specialty areas including Internal Medicine, Adult Critical Care Medicine, Pediatrics and NICU, Antimicrobial Stewardship, Pharmacy Administration, and more,”
“Being a resident means being able to experience this dynamic year at The Reading Hospital Medical Center,” said Gibson. “Not only is this an exciting year for myself in regards to helping establish the Pharmacy Residency Program here at the Hospital, but I am also lucky enough to get to participate in the Reading HealthConnect transition and witness the construction of the new Pharmacy Department.”
In addition to participating in different roles as part of the Pharmacy Department team, residents conduct research or quality improvement projects and prepare and make presentations on various topics both inside and outside the Department and Hospital.
According to Bhojani, “This residency helps me manage and improve the medication-use process, provide evidence-based, patient-centered medication therapy management with interdisciplinary teams, exercise leadership and practice management skills, provide medication and practice-related education or training, and more. I would definitely recommend this program to others because this training program is designed to develop knowledge and encourage clinical leadership. Here, we improve our skills and build confidence. This program is making an undeniable difference in my ability to provide excellent patient care throughout my professional career. Plus, rotations are available in a wide variety of practice areas under the support and guidance of preceptors who challenge the residents and encourage independence.”
Gibson sees the knowledge, skills, and commitment of the Pharmacy staff is a key factor in the success of the Program.“Members of the Pharmacy staff have been incredibly receptive and encouraging. I could not have asked for a better environment to step into after pharmacy school. Someone is always available to provide a helping hand when necessary, but the staff members are also aware that is essential to push us at times so we can advance ourselves into more complete healthcare professionals.”
