  • Simulation Lab:
    • Monthly, we have a formal simulation experience to enhance surgical skills, minimally invasive techniques, and special scenarios (i.e. postpartum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, etc).
    • The lab is also used for additional special training sessions, one-on-one mentoring, and for informal ad hoc sessions with the residents, students, and faculty.
  • Anatomy Cadaver Lab:
    • This is our unique bi-annual Anatomy Cadaver Lab session. For this component of our curriculum, we provide cadavers for the instruction of female pelvic anatomy. We typically conduct eight sessions on Thursdays and Fridays over the course of a month. The Thursday session is dedicated to didactics and the longer Friday session is reserved for dissection and hands-on instruction with trained anatomy instructors on one of four cadavers (four residents to each cadaver). A major advantage of this curriculum is that we focus on the clinical aspects of the female pelvic anatomy such as the anatomic layers, incision types, approaches to a hysterectomy, a hypogastric artery ligation, the space of Retzius, paravaginal defects, and many others.
  • Mock Oral Board Exam:
    • Our mock oral closely simulates the ABOG oral board examination. Our goals are to provide a realistic expectation of the examination, to help our residents to be prepared for the real test, and to reduce anxiety which should lead to better outcomes. Residents learn to prepare and defend a limited case list from their continuity experience. During the examination, residents spend 30 minutes each with examiners testing Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Office Practice. 50% of the Exam is directed at questions from the submitted Case List and 50% are computer generated cases. This portion of our curriculum not only helps our residents DEFEND a Case List well, but also helps them have the fund of knowledge to answer questions that may be asked randomly about General OB/GYN as well as the Subspecialties (MFM, REI, ONC, UROGYN).
  • International Mission Opportunities:
    • We believe strongly in, and encourage, altruism and service to the needy, both locally and internationally. Through the strengths and commitment of the Reading Hospital, and faculty involvement in outreach projects, our residents have realistic and practical opportunities to get involved in both local and international healthcare outreach experiences. The international projects bring healing to those in third-world impoverished areas. We provide opportunities to bring medical care to people whose survival is threatened by malnutrition, untreated gynecologic conditions, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters.
  • Gyn/Endocrine/Office Rotation:
    • During this unique PGY II rotation, residents spend one month working in the office of one of our private ObGyn physicians. This popular rotation has the dual educational objective of learning the diagnosis and management of common endocrine problems seen by a general practicing gynecologist while providing residents with the fundamentals of running and managing a general practice.
  • No fellowships allowing enhanced procedural experience.
  • Six hours per week of protected educational time.
    • 23 hours of protected conference time per month achieves the goals of the CREOG core curriculum. Each workday begins with service rounds followed by a protected educational session attended by all residents and most of the 49 faculty members.

      • Resident Research Symposium: The resident research symposium is a formal evening dinner program with spouses and invited experts to help judge and observe the quality of our residency research. The symposium is completed early in the training to help those who are interested in fellowships or academic positions. It also gives each resident additional time to complete a manuscript of the presented data.
