Jorge J. Scheirer, MD, has been named Vice President and Chief Medical Information Officer at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center. In this newly created position, Dr. Scheirer will be responsible for supporting the development of clinical information systems that assist clinicians in the delivery of high quality patient care.
During the last several years, Dr. Scheirer has provided his expertise in support of the Hospital-wide implementation of computerized physician order entry, and assisted in the design of both its electronic medication reconciliation and discharge management applications. These informatics investments have contributed to improved patient care outcomes in congestive heart failure and pneumonia.
In 1996, he joined The Reading Hospital Medical Staff as an associate in Shillington Internal Medicine Associates. In 2001, Dr. Scheirer became a member of the RPS Internal Medicine faculty practice, and has served as its medical director since 2004. Under his leadership, this practice earned level 3 recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance as a patient-centered medical home, and has been acknowledged as a leader in quality improvement innovations and outcomes by the Governor’s Chronic Care Initiative.
Dr. Scheirer has served on the Hospital’s Physician Advisory Committee for Informatics and the Clinical Systems Committee. and currently serves on the Patient Care and Transitional Care Committees as well as on the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff.

He is clinical assistant professor of medicine at Jefferson Medical College, and is a physician champion for the Pennsylvania Improving Performance in Practice (IPIP) initiative. He has assisted IPIP with quality improvement data analysis and serves as faculty member in a collaborative aimed at improving statewide colorectal cancer screening rates. He is also a faculty member in a collaborative of Pennsylvania residency programs seeking to improve healthcare quality and to become patient-centered medical homes.
A graduate of Albright College and Temple University School of Medicine, Dr. Scheirer completed his internal medicine residency training at Keesler Medical Center, Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1992. He began his postgraduate medical career as a faculty member in the internal medicine residency program at Keesler Medical Center and was discharged with the rank of Major in 1996.
