M. Joseph Grennan, Jr., MD, has been named Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of The Reading Hospital and Medical Center effective January 1, 2011. He succeeds Gerald P. Malick, MD, who will retire at year-end after serving in the same role for 11 years and his entire career in medicine at The Reading Hospital.
A native of Wexford, Pennsylvania, Dr. Grennan brings more than 30 years of clinical, administrative, and health plan management expertise to his leadership role in Reading. His career in healthcare administration began at the University Hospital of Stony Brook, New York, in 1979 and continued at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in Patchogue, New York, and at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Greater New York.
After receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987, Dr. Grennan completed an internship in internal medicine at Pittsburgh’s Allegheny General Hospital and a residency in Anesthesiology and Pain Management at Harvard Medical School and Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
He returned to Allegheny General Hospital and practiced anesthesiology and pain management for more than a decade, serving as Medical Director of that Hospital's Center for Pain Management and creating its Preoperative Evaluation and Preparation Center.
In 2003, Dr. Grennan was appointed Vice President of Clinical Quality and Resource Management for Forbes Regional Hospital. He subsequently served as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at the Humility of Mary Health Partners in Ohio, and as Medical Director of Clinical Client Relationships and Health Excellence Partners at Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield in Pittsburgh.
His most recent position, through FTI Healthcare, was as Interim Chief Medical Officer at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.
Dr. Grennan received bachelor’s degrees in biology and history and a master’s degree in public affairs with a health service concentration from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and a graduate of the Intermountain Health Care Advanced Training Program in Healthcare Delivery Improvement.
About Dr. Malick
Dr. Malick, a native of Schuylkill County, graduated from Ursinus College with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 1963. His postgraduate training included an internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center and a fellowship in gynecologic endocrinology at Jefferson University Hospital. He also served in the U.S. Air Force at Offit Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska, as a member of its department of obstetrics and gynecology.
After eight years of practicing medicine with Women’s Clinic in West Reading, Dr. Malick joined Anton Kleiner, MD, in 1977 to establish Malick and Kleiner Associates, a two-physician women’s health care practice in West Reading.
In 1999, Dr. Malick was appointed Vice President and Medical Director at The Reading Hospital and was elected a member of the Hospital’s Board of Directors. His title was changed to Vice President and Chief Medical Officer in 2009.
Dr. Malick has held a variety of leadership positions during his 42 years on the Hospital's Medical Staff. Those included chairman of the Section of Obstetrics, Medical Staff Executive Committee, and Joint Conference Committee. He participated in the formation and leadership of both the Reading Physicians Organization and Berkshire Health Partners.
