Primary Care Residents to Increase at TRHMC

Monday, September 27, 2010

The Reading Hospital and Medical Center (TRHMC) was awarded a five-year grant by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) worth nearly $2.9 million.  As part of the Affordable Care Act’s Prevention and Public Health Fund, the grant money will be used to train 15 additional primary care residents at TRHMC through 2015.  The residents will train in either Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.

The Primary Care Residency Expansion (PCRE) program funded 82 residency programs nationwide.  PRCE will support the training of 889 new primary care residents, 500 of whom will have completed their training at the end of the five-year period.

There are currently more than 40 residents in the Hospital’s primary care programs with new residents entering the three and four year programs each year.

The residency and medical training programs at TRHMC are supported by institutional affiliations with Jefferson Medical College, Drexel Medical School, Pennsylvania State University, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Temple University, and are accredited through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the American Osteopathic Association.

The Hospital also has Obstetrics and Gynecology, Osteopathic, and Transitional Year residency programs.

Aside from Graduate Medical Education, the Academic Affairs Department at TRHMC also manages Continuing Medical Education (CME) and research.
