Anxiety in Children and Teens: Understanding it and Knowing When to Seek Help

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

The Reading Hospital and Medical Center will hold a free program, “Anxiety and Teens: Understand It and Knowing When to Seek Help,” on Wednesday, May 4, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Crowne Plaza in Wyomissing.

Anxiety disorders affect one out of every eight children and teens. In some, the effects of anxiety can cause disruptions in daily activities such as school, family, and play. Left untreated, anxiety can result in substance abuse or addiction, eating and sleep disorders, or physical problems.

Early identification of symptoms can help decrease the severity of anxiety. Sucheta Connolly, MD, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Kolin Good, MD, Chair of Psychiattry, The Reading Hospital and Medical Center, will discuss the signs and symptoms of common anxiety problems, how to determine when anxiety is not normal, and when a primary care doctor or psychiatrist should become involved.

Other speakers will include Douglas Berne, MD, Chief, Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Muhammad Raza, MD, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, both of The Reading Hospital and Medical Center.

This program is for parents, teachers, guidance counselors, family members and others who work with children and adolescents.

Light refreshments will be served. Registration is required by calling 610-988-HELP (4357).
