Questions About Joint Replacement Surgery

When can I do normal around-the-house activities?

You can – and should – follow all of the activities that your therapists showed you as soon as you arrive home. Replacements of the arm joints (shoulder, elbow, wrist) may be limited on certain activities. You can expect to need assistance with activities that require lifting. However, you are able to use your hand and wrist for simple activities such as feeding yourself, brushing your teeth or shaving. Again, follow the instructions of your therapist and physician.

When do I start strengthening exercises?

Generally within the first few weeks, you will begin a modified exercise program. Four to six weeks after surgery, therapy will begin for strengthening. It may take some time before you feel you are returning to normal function. Do not get discouraged.

When can I shower?

You will be helped to shower while still in the Hospital. Continue as you are shown when you go home.

How long will I need to use the walker or crutches?

Generally, an ankle replacement will need to assistive devices for approximately three months. Most patients with this type of replacement are nonweight bearing for six weeks. If healing is progressing, at that time patients are allowed to place some weight on the joint; however, crutches or walkers are still needed.

Will I have pain?

Our goal is to keep you as comfortable as possible. While you are in the hospital, the doctors and nurses will be working with you to decrease your pain. When you are home, you will have pain medications to keep you comfortable.

When can I drive?

That depends upon the joint replaced and the side (left or right). Only your surgeon can advise you on the timeframe. Remember, you must have control of your muscles and not under the influence of pain medications to resume driving.

When can I return to work?

It depends upon the joint replaced and the type of work you do. High impact activity or lifting should be avoided. If you have a sedentary job, you may return sooner than if you had a physical job.
