Shoulders - FAQs

Questions About Shoulder Surgery

Will I need help?

Yes, you can expect to need assistance with activities that require lifting. However, you are able to use your hand and wrist for simple activities such as feeding yourself, brushing your teeth or shaving.

Do I need to wear the sling?

Yes, do not forget to wear the sling every night for at least the first month after surgery or as your surgeon directs.

When can I return to work?

It depends on the type of work you do. If your job requires heavy lifting or climbing, there may be a delay in returning for several months.

When can I drive?

Driving should wait until you can perform the necessary functions comfortably and confidently. Only your surgeon can give you the proper advice.

When do I start strengthening exercises?

Generally within the first few weeks, you will begin a modified exercise program. Four to six weeks after surgery, therapy will begin for strengthening. It may take some time before you feel you are returning to normal function. Do not get discouraged.
