Reading Health Surgeon is First in Berks County to Offer Mobi-C® Cervical Disc Replacement

H. Christopher Lawson, MD, of Reading Health Physician Network Spine & Brain Neurosurgery, has become the first surgeon in Berks County to perform cervical disc replacement using the Mobi-C® Cervical Disc, an artificial disc that closely replicates natural neck movement.

For years, patients with degenerated discs in their neck have undergone "fusion" surgery, which replaces a degenerated disc with a bone spacer or plastic implant that is then fused in place with a metal plate and screws.

The Mobi-C enables surgeons to replace an adult patient's degenerated discs with a uniquely designed artificial disc, which has a medical grade polyethylene insert that is encased in small metal plates above and below it. The insert is able to rotate within the plates, and adjusts with the patient's normal neck motion.

The Mobi-C received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval in 2013. In clinical trials, patients who had surgery using Mobi-C experienced less major complications, fewer subsequent surgeries, and their return-to-work time for two-level surgery was 20.9 days shorter than those patients who underwent fusion surgery.

Dr. Lawson is currently the only surgeon in Berks County performing cervical disc replacement using the Mobi-C.
