Reading Hospital Named One of 50 of the Greenest Hospitals in America By Becker's Hospital Review

Reading HealthPlex for Advanced Surgical & Patient Care opened to patients on Monday, October 17 and its design is exemplary of the health system's commitment to providing the highest level of patient care as well as protecting and preserving the environment. The building boasts an 88,000-square-foot green roof, the largest green roof in the state of Pennsylvania and the third largest green roof on a healthcare building in the U.S. It provides patients and their families the calming benefits of nature that can enhance patient recovery time and clinical outcomes. It also provides a therapeutic outdoor space so patients, families and employees can relax in nature and manage the stress that can be associated with hospital stays or visits.

On Monday, October 24 Becker's Hospital Review named Reading Hospital one of the 50 Greenest Hospitals in America. Reading HealthPlex offers many environmental benefits. Also called a living roof, the Green Roof is planted over a waterproofing membrane on the roof and has its own irrigation system. Eco-friendly, the Green Roof will improve air quality and will act as an insulator to moderate surface temperature changes. That, in turn, will reduce heating and cooling costs in the new building. The Green Roof also will help reduce the threat of sewer overflows, extend the life of the city's storm drain system, and return cleaner water to the surrounding watershed.

The Green Roof is a critical component of the Reading HealthPlex because it enhances patient health, protects the environment, reduces heating and cooling costs, strengthens our role as a good community neighbor, and enhances the beauty of the Reading Health System campus.
