Reading Health Employees Begin Virtual Walk to West Coast on Monday, August 1

Beginning Monday, August 1, Reading Health will begin an employee wellness challenge called "PA2CA." PA2CA is a virtual walk from Reading, Pennsylvania, to the west coast that will be completed by teams of 10 team members walking a total of 5.6 million steps over eight weeks. At the conclusion of the challenge, all teams who achieve the walking goal will be entered into a drawing to win a trip to California. Each of the winning team members can choose a four day, three night trip to Disneyland®, San Francisco, San Diego, Napa Valley or Rancho Palos Verdes. Employees can also bring a guest on the trip for a discounted price. PA2CA Walking Challenge co-sponsors, White Star Tours and Boscov's Travel, will arrange the travel.

More than 4,200 employees (nearly 62 percent) are registered to participate in the walking challenge.

To track team progress Reading Health partnered with Fitbit®. Employees were able to purchase the Fitbit Flex for only $10. Partnering with Fitbit allows employees to automatically track their steps and monitor team progress. Every Monday, Reading Health will recognize the individual and team that has taken the most steps from the previous week.

The walking challenge was designed to help employees incorporate exercise into their daily schedule and see the positive impact physical activity can have on their day. Pre and post screenings are offered to measure recovery heart rate, height, weight and blood pressure for individuals to track their progress. The goal was set based on research that shows health benefits of walking a minimum of 10,000 steps each day.

Teams were encouraged to create creative names incorporating California, their department or walking. Team names include; California Dreamers, Holy Walkamolies, 2Fit2Quit, Agony of Defeet, California Coast Busters, ED NightLife, and Revenue Cycle Warriors.

To celebrate the start of the challenge participants are invited to join Clint Matthews President & CEO and Therese Sucher, Executive Vice President & COO for a ceremonial "kick-off" walk on Reading Hospital's West Reading campus at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, August 1.
