Applicants to the Reading Hospital School of Medical Laboratory Science will be considered for admission based on several criteria:
- Overall grade point average.
- Grade point average in the combined Biology and Chemistry courses.
- College/University affiliation or non-affiliation.
- Performance on a face-to-face interview.
- References from relevant academic instructors or advisors. Graduate applicants may also submit references from professional colleagues who can attest to the applicant’s potential as a medical laboratory science student.
- Students will be considered without regard to age, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, national origin or other legally protected classification.
Applicants must have successfully completed a minimum of three years (90 semester hours) in an accredited college or university. The Medical Laboratory Science Program has affiliations with several colleges/universities. These institutions provide the prerequisite courses needed to enter the pre-professional laboratory program. Students from these affiliated colleges/universities are given preference for admission into the program.
Medical Laboratory Science students enrolled in non-affiliated 3+1 baccalaureate programs may also be considered if their college/university agrees to establish a temporary affiliation agreement, assuring the student twill receive appropriate credit for the time spent during the clinical year. Applicants who have earned a baccalaureate degree from either an affiliated or non-affiliated accredited college or university may also be considered if they meet the necessary entrance requirements.
The Program Director and members of the faculty interview qualified candidates and make the final decisions on student acceptance and class size. The usual class size is six students per year, although the faculty committee reserves the right to modify the class size due to circumstances in any year.
Students may begin the application process after their sophomore year, but must have successfully completed three full years in an accredited college or university before the start of the program. The minimum courses required are:
- Chemistry – 16 semester hours, including organic chemistry or biochemistry
- Biology – 16 semester hours, including microbiology, immunology, and anatomy or physiology
- Mathematics – 3 semester hours; statistics is strongly recommended
- Courses in genetics or molecular biology are recommended
Survey courses do not qualify as fulfillment of the chemistry and biology prerequisites. The academic grade point average of the student shall be a minimum of 2.5 overall, as well as 2.5 in the combined biology and chemistry courses completed.
Once accepted, the student must maintain his/her 2.5 average in the remaining college courses. The Hospital program may withdraw a student's acceptance for failure to maintain this average, or for failure to successfully complete all required prerequisites.
The courses taken during the previous three years shall meet the requirements of the college or university so that the student will be granted a baccalaureate degree by the college upon satisfactory completion of the Hospital program. (3+1 option)
Candidates who apply seven years or more after receiving their B.A. or B.S. degree shall update their academic preparation to the approval of the program (grade C+ or better.) It is strongly recommended that a student's microbiology, organic chemistry or biochemistry, and immunology courses be updated.
Applicants with degrees from foreign universities shall satisfy the criteria set forth by NAACLS and shall have their transcripts evaluated by an evaluation agency that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. A list of acceptable agencies is available from the Program Director of The Hospital Program. Students whose degree is from a non-American, Canadian, or British college must take the Test of English as a Fluent Language. Applicants who take the paper-based TOEFL, must also take the Test of Written English (TWE).
Students must also satisfy certain institutional requirements before beginning the program and immediately after the start of each program year. Before a student arrives on campus each must complete a medical health history form and obtain a medical examination by his/her own private physician and supply results of that examination, along with results from his/her immunization history. The specifics of what immunizations and records are required are provided to the student with the complete pre-entrance packet. Students admitted into the program must provide their own hospitalization insurance and provide the name of an emergency contact person. Criminal background checks and child abuse clearances are required of all students in any of the Hospital’s programs. Students will be required to get a two-step TST test for tuberculosis and undergo a urine drug screen when they begin the program in July. Students in the School of Medical Laboratory Science are covered under the hospital’s liability insurance. Instruction on Safety, OSHA and HIPAA regulations are required of all students and are provided within the context of the three week Orientation period.

The following checklist will help you keep track of what you will need to provide/accomplish throughout the application process:
- Request an official transcript from ALL colleges/universities where courses were taken and have the transcript(s) sent directly to the Program Director of the School of Medical Laboratory Science.
- Request two letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the Program Director for the School of Medical Laboratory Science. One letter should be from the MLS advisor and one letter should be from one of the student’s Biology or Chemistry professors. Letters from both a Biology and a Chemistry professor are required if the advisor does not also function as an instructor in the program.
- Complete the application form (provided online or upon request), including the 200- to 300-word autobiography/career statement, as described on the application form.
- Sign the application form and send it to the School of Medical Laboratory Science with a check for $30 (application fee), made payable to: Reading Hospital.
- Mail the completed application, essay, and fee to:
